Big Sale at Rock-A-Round

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

From Mike at Rock-A-Round: I’m having a SALE!

That’s right, I’m about to buy another very large collection, so I need to clear out the old stock. Before I drop this all off on consignment or run it on eBay, I wanted to give you all one last chance to pick up anything you might have passed on. Below is the culmination of what remains after the last 4 emails of updates. It’s quite possibly the largest single listing I’ve ever posted and I will be offering the following price breaks for you:

Orders up to $50, take 10% off
Orders over $50, take 20% off

Sale is for this weekend only, then these records are gone!

THE BLUE BONNETS LIVE AT WATERLOO TUES. JUNE 22nd AT 5PM

spacerLike a Texas-California combo plate, the BlueBonnets serve up a set of glamorous glitter blues rock complimented with layered girl group harmonies. There is a rough garage band energy to the songs, songs that are held together by tight arrangements and stylistic guitar interplay, solid grooves, and unforgettable melodies. The band formed in 2007, as a restructuring of a former line-up that began in Los Angeles in the 90’s. When Kathy Valentine returned to live in her home town of Austin, she decided the city was the perfect place to re-introduce the band that she and Dominique Davalos had conceived when they first began their long musical partnership. The BlueBonnets put a feminine slant on on blues based rock n roll yet cannot fall neatly into any musical category.

TERRI HENDRIX LIVE AT WATERLOO THURS. JUNE 24 AT 5PM

spacerTerri Hendrix is one of the most strikingly original singer-songwriters working today, as befits an artist who cites the varied likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Sonny Terry, John Prine, and even the British techno-country-blues ensemble Alabama 3 among her biggest influences. Hendrix has covered every genre from folk to country to pop to blues to Celtic to Tex-Mex to jazz to Western swing. She even scored a satellite radio hit in the punky scream-along “Nerves” from her kids album, and co-wrote a Grammy winning country instrumental (“Lil’ Jack Slade”) on the Dixie Chicks’ multi-platinum 2003 album, “Home.”

DAPHNE WILLIS LIVE AT WATERLOO WED. JUNE 30th AT 5PM

spacerChicago-based Daphne Willis has grown from a feisty neophyte into a self-assured, marvelously expressive artist with a bracingly seductive sound. The 22-year-old’s Vanguard Records debut album, What to Say, documents Willis’ voyage of self-discovery and is a captivating introduction to a remarkably fresh voice -one that both reflects and scrutinizes the social patterns of her generation.

Simmons on Vinyl tonight in Austin

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Austin Film Festival Presents “Simmons on Vinyl”
7:30pm
$4 for general admission, FREE for AFF Members

With the help of his friends, Zeke goes on a search for a vinyl record that takes him on a wild chase all over town, running into mean high school punks, troubled bosses, kidnappings and even a very difficult dance off challenge – all in hopes that the record will nab the heart of his dream girl. Potts again creates a micro-budget comedy (following last year’s Stanton Family Grave Robbery) about going great lengths to impress a girl. He also proves how funny babies can be as comical devises. • Itziar ”S/T” LP Itziar were a band named after Itziar Egileor, a Basque female singer with a beautiful, crystalline voice. The band’s only album displays sensitive songwriting, and is quite similar in style and atmosphere to other Basque folk/progressive masterpieces by Haizea and Itoiz.
  • Kaleidoscope ”S/T” LP (Mexico) LP (Ciruela) Sole album by one of the legendary groups of the Mexican rock scene, considered by many to be the best psychedelic record of the late 1960’s to come from anywhere in all of Latin America.
  • Kano Y Los Bulldogs ”S/T” LP Kano and his Bulldogs were one of the better known beat, garage & early psych bands in Uruguay back in the ’60s.
  • La Vida ”S/T” LP Reissue of a very rare Mexican garage/psych album with great Doors/Seeds like keyboards and freaky wah wah guitar sounds that clash (in a good sense) with funky Latin American percussion.
  • Limonada ”Limo Nada” LP (Lion)
  • Miguel Abuelo & Nada ”Miguel Abuelo Et Nada” LP (Abuelo) 1973 album by Miguel Abuelo & Nada while he was living in France is, no doubt, one of the best Argentinian rock albums ever recorded, and probably also one of the best out of South America.
  • Piel De Pueblo ”Rock De Las Heridas” LP (Ciruela) Licensed LP release of this epochal heavy psychedelic rock album, first issued in 1972; Argentine rock pioneers Pajarito Zaguri and extraordinary guitarist Nacho Smilari (formerly in La Barra de Chocolate and Vox Dei) got together to form this short-lived heavy psych group.

  • Little Ann ”Deep Shadows” LP (Timmion) Brilliant soul from the Detroit underground of the late 60s – a full set of work by vocalist Little Ann, issued here for the first time ever. You might recognize Ann’s name from her appearance on a few of the Ace/Kent Records issues of material by Detroit producer Dave Hamilton over the years, Comes from those classic collaborations with Hamilton – trapped on tape for many years, always contemplated as a possible Little Ann album.
